Members, Family, and Friends,
2011 As I started writing this message, I was notified that PGK, PFN, FDD and current Queens County Conference Vice Chairman, Ed Hartstein, has passed away. Most of us remember Ed for his participation on the degree teams and mentoring of new members. Ed had an impressive run with the Knights and he will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Please keep the Hartstein Family and Ed’s Soul in your prayers.
Last month, a letter was mailed by Supreme to our membership. Most of us received it over the New Year’s Weekend. The letter informed everyone that our Council was suspended for non-payment of per-capita. This Subject was brought up at our December Business meeting. Our most recent statement was $400.00 more than what we expected. A motion was brought to the floor and we voted unanimously to pay $500 and request a clarification of our Invoice. Our Financial Secretary, Ron Sinacori, called them on Tuesday, January 3rd, immediately after the Holiday Weekend. We were told that our $500 payment was received that same day (Jan. 3rd) and the Suspension was immediately lifted. The $400 difference was a “Culture of Life” assessment of $2 per member. This charge is not per-capita. We all thought that this assessment was a one time deal, last year. It seems that the assessment has been extended. It takes numerous phone calls and a pile of paperwork to suspend a member for non-payment of dues. I think that one Fraternal phone call from Supreme could have saved the cost of 200 scare tactic letters and the Suspension of a Council over 110 years old. I’m sorry that everyone was put through this. Please don’t let this dampen your thoughts about the Knights of Columbus and all the good works that we do.
Our Worthy State Deputy, Sal Restivo, has a television show called “Building His Dream” on Telecare. Telecare is a television network that broadcasts local and national religious programming and Events for the Catholic Church in America. Sal invited me for a 5 min. interview which took place a couple of months ago. The Topic was St. Mary’s healthcare System for Children. The episode will be televised for one week starting on February 6th. The show times are Monday (2/6) 9:15am & 7:15pm, Tuesday (2/7) @ 9am & 7pm, Wednesday (2/8) @ 9am, and Friday (2/10) @ 9:15am & 7pm. Telecare is televised on channel 296 on FIOS, channel 29 / 137 on Cable and their Website: www.telecaretv.org. It’s not easy being interviewed for a TV show. Please let me know how I did. This show will be acting as the Kick-off to an upcoming Fraternal Met Game and a Golf Outing for the Benefit of St Mary’s. Sal has promised a minimum $25,000.00 Donation at the State level for a Sponsorship Opportunity at the Hospital’s upcoming Treatment Center. It’s all for St. Mary’s Kids and it’s all GOOD!
We have a busy month ahead filled with numerous Fundraisers and Council Events. Our Annual Super Bowl, Valentine’s and Daytona Parties are sure to provide a good time for us all. As always, information can be found in this issue and on our Website: www.generalshermanfathershine569.org . I’ll see you at the Council.
Fraternally,
Freddie Jost, Grand Knight
